HomeMade Flour Tortillas Recipe.
Here is what you are going to need:
4 Cups of Flour
1/2 Cup of Vegetable Shortening
1/8 Teaspoon of Baking Powder
1 1/2 Teaspoon of Salt
*1 Cup of Hot Water (plus just a little more)
1. In a Bowl add the 4 Cups of Flour, the 1/2 Cup of Vegetable Shortening and the 1/8 Teaspoon of Vegetable Shortening.
I don't have a a 1/8 of a teaspoon so I just fill the 1/4 Teaspoon half way
2. Mix all these ingredients together.
I use a fork to cut in to the shortening and mix them all together
3. In a smaller Bowl add the 1 1/2 Teaspoon of Salt with the 1 cup of Hot Water
You don't want the water to be boiling.
I turn the faucet water on Hot and let it run for a few mins until its Hot .
I use a 2 Cup measuring cup as my mixing bowl.
* I fill my measuring cup to 1 Cup and add just a little more (about 2 - 3 Tablespoons).
Mix salt and water until it dissolves.
4. Combine the Water and Salt with your Flour Mixture.
Slowly pour the water into the Flour Mixture.
Use the same fork that you used to mix the shortening into the flour to mix in the water and salt.
(I turn the bowl around as well, that way I mix the water in to the entire flour mixture.)
5. Knead your dough.
After you add the water to the mixture begin to knead your dough.
(I start with my hand and once I've combined all the flour together, then I knead with my fist).
It should all blend together well.
6. Let your dough sit and rest
After kneading your dough, let it sit and rest for 20 minutes.
Its important that you let it rest for no more or no less than 20 minutes
. (I put the dough into the same bowl you used to mix it in and cover it with a dish towel.
Covering the entire top of the dough with the towel.)
7. Make your dough balls
After letting your dough rest you want to cut/make dough balls for your tortillas.
(I cut small portions of the dough with my hands similar to a golf ball size.)
The reason why you do this is because it will cut down the time it takes to make tortillas
*Make sure you recover your dough balls, you don't want them to dry out!
8. Press your tortillas
Once you have your dough balls made, start to press and flatten your tortillas.
( I use a rolling pin)
You can use what you have at home, a Large plastic cup will work.
* Make sure that you flatten them pretty thin.
9. Cooking Time
Heat up a Pan on Medium/High .
Cook each tortilla for 15 sec on each side ( you will flip over 3 times!)
You can use a spatula to flip them.
I Like to flatten a few while my pan is heating up. That way I can flatten and cook at the same time. Just keep in mind that you have to pay attention to the stove, you don't want them to burn!
* Make sure your counters are clean!!
This is your final Product, I make about 20-24 tortillas per Recipe.
I cover them with a dish towel and after they've cooled down a bit I us a large ziplog bag to put them in.You don't want them to dry out.
These will be good up to a few days in the fridge.
Take out a few at a time and reheat them on a pan as needed!
